Ropley hosted Hythe and Dibden on Saturday. It was a must win game for both sides as they are both hovering

above the County Division 2 relegation places. It was a superb game for the many spectators with fabulous July

weather and 500 runs scored in 90 overs.

Ropley made a solid start to their innings with openers Gerrard and Hughes comfortably putting on over 100

runs off the first 20 overs of the game. Gerrard was run out for 66 with Hughes following shortly after for an

impressive 44 runs, most of which came from classic straight drives. Captain Tom Wood came to the crease

and steadied the ship. He was joined by the flamboyant Stogdon who started his innings with a reverse sweep

for four and carried on in this vain, delighting the crowd. Further wickets fell as Ropley upped the run rate.

Stogdon by this stage was just showing off and his fine innings of 49 not out was capped by a switch hit 6.

Ropley posted a competitive total of 247 for 9. The pick of the Hythe and Dibden bowlers was Thomason

taking 3 wickets off his 10 overs.

Hythe and Dibden opened their innings with a solid but slow partnership of 70 runs, anchored by Howe who

was eventually bowled for 46 runs. Ropley legend Munday was making inroads in to the batting line up and

keeping the run rate in check. He finished his spell with 4 wickets for 36 runs but he could not dislodge Hythe

and Dibden's overseas player De Jager who, batting at number 4, was resolute in defence and doing just

enough to keep the run rate from spiralling out of control. When Froggett came to the crease the run rate

was heading toward 9 an over. Ropley dropped several catches off Froggett that would have sealed the

game however his charmed life continued. De Jager not only gave no chances, he timed his assault on the

total to perfection. His off driven six that won the game for Hythe and Dibden in the second to last over

brought his undefeated total to 106.

It was a great game that featured two stellar batting performances and was played in a great spirit. Hythe and

Dibden can breathe a little easier as they now appear to be safe. Ropley however, still require at least one win

to guarantee they remain in County Division 2.

Ropley slipped to another disappointing defeat on Saturday thanks to another batting collapse which left the

bowlers with too much to do. After being invited to make first use of a difficult batting wicket, there was little

indication of the carnage that was to follow as the opening bowlers offered plenty of run scoring opportunities

to the early batsmen. Both Nick Gerrard & Henry Hughes surrendered their wickets tamely, however the runs

still flowed freely as Alexander Stogdon (26) saw them to 48 within the first 8 overs. 2 wickets in as many overs

stopped the momentum, but Martin Peters & Ollie Williams dug in to edge the score slowly to 82-3 at the

halfway point. Williams departed & Peters was hit on the hand & forced to retire hurt, which sparked a huge

collapse as a further 3 wickets fell at 89, swing bowler Wallis being the main threat as he extracted

considerable swing & seam movement in the helpful conditions. Peters resumed his innings despite

considerable pain (later diagnosed as a broken thumb which will rule him out of the rest of the season),

but when he became the forth victim for Wallis for a brave 37 the innings folded for just 107. Wallis ended

with 5-19 from 8 overs to leave the home side with an easy looking chase. Early wickets were crucial &

Alexander Stogdon & Mark Munday applied huge pressure to the early batsmen with good length &

considerable movement of their own. Both were rewarded for their accuracy as Hungerford struggled to

just 51-2 as they bowled their 10 over allocations straight through, Stogdon 1-27 & Munday 1-24. Wallis

was now showing his batting prowess too as he glued the reply together, he was threatened a few times

by the wily John Sutton (1-16 from 6), but he batted with great grit & style for an unbeaten 57 to see his side

to a comfortable 7 wicket win, but credit must go to the Ropley bowlers who fought all the way as the game

ended in the 34th over of the reply.

Ropley secured their third victory of the season with a tense 2 run win over high flying Lymington on Saturday.

After winning the toss & batting they lost a wicket in just the second over, but Henry Hughes & Tom Wood added

48 for the second wicket before Wood departed for 14. Alexander Stogdon joined Hughes in a stand of 36,

Hughes smashing 7 boundaries in a brisk 46 before falling attempting another big hit, leaving the score at 89-3

after 19 overs. Martin Peters then helped Stogdon add a further 45 runs, but Stogdon then fell for 27 to a tame

dismissal just when he looked poised for a big score. The last 15 overs saw Peters & the recalled Chris Graham

compile an unbroken stand of 89 runs with a combination of elegant strokeplay, both particularly strong through

the off side, & good running between the wickets. Peters ended on 77 from 89 balls, with Graham scoring 33

from 41 balls as the innings ended on 223-4.

The Lymington innings was never allowed to get started as both Stogdon & the ever-reliable John Sutton bowled

testing opening spells. Sutton was rewarded with the first 3 wickets, including removing the dangerous looking

Stevenson with a surprise bouncer, & when Stogdon (2-45) picked up the veteran opener Trestrail for 26 the reply

was in tatters at 68-5. Home skipper Naylor decided that attack was the best option, he smashed a run a ball 41

with a 6 & 5 4s, but when he holed out on the leg side boundary off of Mark Munday (1-31) Ropley were the

favourites at 103-6. However they had not bargained for 2 talented 16 year olds in the shape of Elliott & Brennan,

who batted with maturity beyond their years in compiling a stand of 77 in 18 overs as they edged the hosts towards

the victory target. 65 runs were required from the last 10 overs with 4 wickets remaining & the game swung back

in Ropleys favour when Peters (1-42) removed Elliott for 64. Brilliant out fielding from Hughes, including several

gravity defying diving saves, kept the pressure on the batsmen with 35 needed from the last 5 overs. Captain

Wood (1-31) manfully accepted the challenge to bowl from one end & with Sutton operating from the other they

were holding their nerve well, 4 tight boundary free overs meant that 16 were needed from Sutton's final over. 3

runs came from the first 2 balls, but Brennan smashed the third for 6 to give the home side a big chance. Sutton

(3-53) held his nerve well with the next 2 balls costing just a single each, meaning that 4 were needed for a tie of

the last ball. However Brennan could only scamper a 2 from the last to finish unbeaten on 52 giving Ropley the

victory by the smallest margin.

Saturday 3rd July Ropley Vs Sarisbury CountyDiv 2

Ropley suffered a convincing home defeat on Saturday, on a day which began badly & got progressively

worse. Already short of their 2 most effective bowlers, Mark Munday & Alexander Stogdon due to holiday

commitments, opening bowler Ben O'Sullivan failed to turn up, meaning they had to field with just 10

players after losing the toss. Despite the best efforts of the energetic Toby Sampson & fellow opening

bowler John Sutton, Sarisbury were given a solid start by Colin Day, dropped from the first team, &

S Davies who put on 95 for the first wicket. Davies departed for 49, but Floyd joined Day in a 70 run

partnership to lay the foundations for a big total. Tom Stroud bowled Day for 66 & also had McKeever

caught on his way to figures of 2-58, but Floyd held firm to fire 71 not out as they racked up 92 runs in

the last 10 overs to set a competitive 254 run target. Martin Peters 1-36 & Tom Wood, bowling for the

first time this season, 1-15 were the other wicket takers, Sutton was economical in 0-38 from 10, but

being a man down in the field probably cost at least 30 runs.
Sarisbury opened the bowling with a combination of swing & spin, which proved effective in keeping the

run rate under check early in the reply, this forced batsmen to take more risks & culminated in wickets

being thrown away. Ropley were unable to string any meaningful partnerships together as only

Nick Gerrard 10, Wood 10, Stroud 11 & Peters 23 reached double figures. All of the visiting bowlers

took wickets, but leg spinner Hammond impressed as he bowled 6 overs & took 5 wickets for just

16 runs as the reply crumbled to just 101 all out & a 153 run defeat.

Saturday 26th June Ropley Vs Portsmouth II, CountyDiv 2

A combination of poor fielding & bowling, alongside missing their 2 key bowlers, contributed greatly to a

disappointing defeat away at lowly Portsmouth on Saturday.
After winning the toss & batting first, posting a competitive total was crucial, so an opening stand of 74

between Nick Gerrard & John Purchese in the face of some aggressive bowling from Vikram, laid a solid

platform. Purchese fell for 25 & another wicket went quickly after, but Peters (16) & Gerrard compiled 46

to have Ropley comfortably placed at 121-3 with 20 overs still to go. Portsmouth bizarrely decided to place

all the fielders on the boundary whenever Gerrard faced, meaning he scored plenty of singles, but he also

managed to blast 12 fours & 2 massive sixes as he struck an impressive 98 before being brilliantly run out

by a direct hit from Vikram. This left the last 8 overs for last weeks hero Andrew Walker to work his magic,

he was ably supported by Stuart Currall (33*) in an unbroken stand of 67, as he blazed to all parts of the

ground in smashing a belligerant 43 off just 25 balls, including 3 maximums as the innings ended on a

competitive 250-5.
Ropley nearly made the perfect start to the reply, opener Vikram was spilled in the slips before he had scored

in the first over, a drop that they would pay dearly for. John Sutton (2-32) & Ben O'Sullivan (1-55) did make

early inroads, both collecting a wicket as Portsmouth stuttered to 27-2. Home skipper Moon looked in

dangerously good form, he struck 32 from just 21 balls before a clever Sutton long hop saw him well caught

by the diving Ollie Williams at mid wicket. The score was then 70-3, Fleming (32) helped Vikram add 75,

before Purchese (2-32), having his first bowl of the season due to the lack of available bowlers, took 2

wickets in his first 2 overs to give the visitors a glimmer of hope at 159-5. Just when Ropley really needed

to be tight in the field errors crept in, poor outfielding saw 2s taken when only one should have been &

several balls went through fielders legs on the boundary costing critical 4s, the bowlers also contributed

23 extra balls courtesy of wides & no-balls. Vikram was batting sensibly after his earlier reprieve, sweeping

the disappointing slow bowling attack with ease as he patiently made his way to an unbeaten 109. He was

joined by Payso who was rather more attack minded, he flayed an unbeaten 47 from 44 balls in a stand of

92 that took Portsmouth to victory from the first ball of the last over.

Saturday 19th June Ropley Vs Flamingo, CountyDiv 2

Andrew Walker inspired Ropley to only their second win of the season on Saturday, scoring a crucial unbeaten

59 as they beat the previously unbeaten Flamingo by 4 wickets.

Flamingo were invited to bat first & openers Heath & Greer adopted very different tactics to combat the recalled

Ben O'Sullivan & the ever impressive Alexander Stogdon. Greer impressively played his shots while Heath

defended stoutly in an opening stand of 57, Stogdon finally removed Greer for 34, courtesy of a sharp catch in

the gully from Barry Newton. Heath departed for just 18 in the 20th over of the innings, giving Stogdon a richly

deserved second wicket on his way to figures of 2-25 from his 10 overs. Wily left arm spinner Mark Munday was

then introduced & he bowled with great control, conceding just 2 runs from his first 6 overs. Flamingo were

comfortably placed at 91-3 in the 25th over when a stunning piece of fielding from Stogdon, a diving one

handed stop followed by a direct hit from the kneeling position, effected a run out to change the impetus of the

innings. The evergreen John Sutton recovered from a shaky start to grab 3 wickets of his own as the innings

slipped to 110-7, only Egerton 24 put up much resistance as the returning O'Sullivan (2-44) helped to finish off

the tail, the innings closed on 138 all out. Munday took 2-11 from his full 10 over spell, 4 of the runs conceded

were down to mis-fields!
Chasing a small total has never been their strength, so a solid start was crucial for Ropley, but seeing Nick

Gerrard depart with only 8 on the board after just 3 overs was not part of the master plan! Youngster Henry

Hughes was joined by skipper Tom Wood & they compiled a stand of 36, but when Wood was bowled for 16 by

Downing (2-25) a mid innings collapse ensued. They fell to 62-5 then 84-6 as Egerton (3-13) bowled with great

control to put real pressure on the tail enders. However Walker decided that he should play to his strengths &

attack the bowling & he found a suitable ally in Newton who defended resolutely as they edged their way

towards the target. Walker was particularly severe on anything on his legs as he blasted 59 from just 46 balls,

including 9 fours & 2 towering sixes, as the partnership totalled 55 and they cruised home with 10 overs to

spare. Walker finished off in style by blasting opener Heath for 18 off 5 balls in a rousing finale.

Saturday 12th June Ropley Vs Purbrook II, CountyDiv 2

Ropley suffered a crushing 90 run defeat to the previously win-less Purbrook on Saturday, to continue their

hugely disappointing start to the county division 2 season. After inviting their hosts to bat first, the opening

bowlers, particularly Alexander Stogdon, kept a tight rein on the run rate as the first 15 overs yielded just 32

runs for the loss of one wicket. Home skipper Holder apart, the Purbrook batting looked frail as Mark Munday

bowled with his usual control (1-31 in 10 overs) & at 25 overs the score had only progressed to 75-2. However,

during the middle to late overs the Ropley bowlers served up a variety of poor deliveries as Holder (78) and the

tail-enders helped themselves to some easy runs as the innings finished at 214-9. Veterans Barry Newton 3-54

& John Sutton 4-62 picked up the wickets whilst proving a little expensive. Ropley's reply was given a flying start

with both Nick Gerrard 23 & Stogdon 21 regularly finding the boundary in an opening stand of 46. Tom Wood 12

& Martin Peters 27 both got themselves in & then out as they slumped from 81-3 to 96-6, & the tail again failed

to wag as the innings subsided to a paltry 124 all out with a full 10 overs un-used.

Saturday 5th June Ropley V Hook II, County Div 2

In a match which saw a total of 509 runs scored for the loss of only 11 wickets, Ropley came out on the wrong

side of a 3 wicket defeat on Saturday.
Having won the toss, skipper Tom Wood unsurprisingly decided to bat first on a great looking pitch with a fast

outfield. Youngster John Purchese was asked to open the batting with the free-scoring Nick Gerrard, & by the

time that the first drinks break came around at 15 overs they were comfortably placed at 82-0. Gerrard fell for 40

in the first over after the break, but Wood joined Purchese in another stand of 82, although these were scored at

a crucially slower pace as just 49 runs came in the next 15 overs. Wood upped the tempo as he blasted 55 runs

from 60 balls as Purchese anchored the innings, Martin Peters hit a quickfire 30 off just 14 balls as the incoming

batsmen had the licence to hit out. Purchese joined in during the last 5 overs as he increased his scoring rate to

finish unbeaten on 82, as Ropley scored a competitive 253-4 in their 45 overs.
Early wickets were required to put the pressure on the Hook batsmen & when Smith removed the opener with

just 23 on the board, hopes were high. 2 wickets from Barry Newton reduced Hook to 97-3 after 20 overs, but

opener Hall seemed to be able to find the boundary at will as his runs came very easily. Toby Sampson bowled

aggressively, extracting both swing & movement, & he deservedly claimed a wicket of his own to leave the reply

at 127-4. Visiting skipper Gardener joined Hall in a critical stand of 97, intelligently handing the strike to Hall who

continued to blaze to all parts of the ground on his way to a century off 93 balls. Sampson finally got his man

when he bowled Hall for 129, scored out of a team total of 224-5. Peters claimed 2 wickets in one over at 246 to

give Hook a nervous finish, but they eventually crossed the line with just 8 ball & 3 wickets in hand. Gardner

carried his bat for 36 which effectively saw his team home.

Saturday 22nd May, Idlers v Ropley, County Div 2.

Former South Wilts & Wiltshire opener Joe Cranch inspired Idlers to their 3rd consecutive victory in county

division 2, in a comfortable 83 run win at Ropley.

Idlers chose to bat first on a roasting afternoon & the early batsmen made the most of the conditions as Ince &

Cranch put on 52 for the first wicket, then skipper Harms joined Cranch in a 100 run stand as the bowlers were

made to toil. The introduction of spin slowed the run rate as a couple of wickets fell, Mark Munday (0-40) applied

the brakes at one end while Martin Peters (3-54) picked up the wickets at the other, including the prized scalp of

Cranch LBW for 93 in the 32nd over. Cranch had looked set for a huge total as he scored with ease to all parts

of the ground, his knock included 13 4s & 3 6s before his demise. What looked likely to be a score in excess of

275, ended up being restricted to 239-8, with John Sutton 3-47 & Tom Stroud 2-24 bowling well at the death.

The Ropley reply needed a brisk & steady start & this was duly supplied by Nick Gerrard 23 & Alexander

Stogdon 21, they put on 44 for the first wicket. Skipper Tom Wood (14) then helped Peters add 58 for the 3rd

wicket, putting Ropley in with a good chance at 113-2, needing 127 to win from the final 21 overs with 8 wickets

left. However, the introduction of Cranch as a bowler changed the game again, despite his first over being

clubbed for 13 runs, he picked up 2 crucial wickets in his next over & quickly followed that up with a spectacular

diving catch to get rid of Peters for a 48 ball 56, leaving the innings in disarray at 129-5. As in previous weeks,

the Ropley lower order failed badly again, only Stroud 12 & Currall 13 made double figures as they crumbled to

just 156 all out, losing their last 5 wickets for just 12 runs against some mediocre bowling to stumble to a

disappointing defeat.

Saturday 15th May, Pylewell Park v Ropley, County Div 2.

Ropley recorded their first win of the season with a patchy performance at Pylewell Park on Saturday.

Pylewell won the toss & batted first, a decision which soon looked like a poor one as the Ropley opening

bowlers Alexander Stogdon & 2nd team captain John Sutton made early inroads. Stogdon applied huge

pressure on the early batsmen, continuously beating the outside edge for the second week running without

any luck, but Sutton proved a canny partner at the other end as he extracted generous swing & movement

to pick up the crucial early wickets. After being 15-0, Pylewell were reduced to 31-5 as Sutton picked up 4

wickets, the introduction of Barry Newton brought about another & when Martin Peters collected 2 wickets

of his own the innings was in total disarray at 50-7 then 74-8. However, the lack of a quality 4th bowler again

stood out as the Pylewell numbers 9 & 10 compiled a stand of 84, Bowker 33 & Scriven 49, to inflate the

final total to a competitive 160 all out. The unlucky Stogdon ended with 0-17 off his 10 overs, Sutton claimed

an impressive 4-22, Newton 1-33 & Peters claimed 2 wickets in the final over to finish with a slightly flattering

4-43.

Stogdon was promoted to open the innings in an attempt to get some quick runs on the board, to try to avoid

repeating a failed run chase of a similar target from the previous week at Hursley. He helped Nick Gerrard

add 32 for the first wicket, and then skipper Tom Wood joined Gerrard to add 66 in quick time, as Ropley

appeared to be coasting to victory. However the demise of Gerrard for a well struck 65 from just 64 deliveries

seemed to slow the impetus & when Wood & Stuart Currall fell in quick succession the doubts began to surface

at 119-4. Peters was joined by Keith Purchese, who was only called up on the morning of the match, as they

tried to eek their side to the winning line in the face of some tight bowling, particularly from Clive Kitcher

(1-18 in 10 overs). When Peters fell for a hard fought 22 from 40 balls just 9 were needed, & Purchese duly

finished the job with his first boundary of the day to end unbeaten on 11 from 39 balls, as the 5 wicket victory

was achieved in the 42nd over.

Saturday 8th May, Hursley Park II v Ropley, County Div 2.

Ropley started their season on Saturday by snatching defeat from the jaws of victory as they lost a low scoring

encounter with Hursley by just 3 runs.

Alexander Stogdon made a welcome return to the side & bowled a beautiful opening spell, regularly beating

the bat of both openers, who managed to compile a 58 run stand on a slow wicket. The introduction of spinner

Mark Munday quickly changed the complexion of the game, he took a wicket in his first over as he proved

the catalyst of a batting collapse, which saw Hursley slump from 58-0 to 109-7 in the next 15 overs. Only

Mansbridge (32) provided any real resistance until veterans Prendegast & Jones put on a crucial 56 for the 8th

wicket. Munday bowled his 10 overs straight through to end with the magnificent return of 5-16, Stogdon finished

with 1-29 as Hursley closed on 166-8.

Ropley quickly found themselves 2 wickets down in their reply, & when the returning Nick Gerrard (13) fell with

the score on 40-3 the target started to look a long way off. However, Martin Peters was joined by 15-year-old

John Purchese who batted with great patience to help re-build the chase, scoring 20 out of a partnership of 62

to put Ropley firmly back on track. 2 quick wickets (105-5) brought Stogdon to the crease & he alongside Peters

looked to be guiding Ropley to a comfortable win. 18 runs were required from the final 3 overs with 5 wickets left,

but when Peters hit a full toss to cover to be out for a battling 77 the jitters started to set in. The incoming batsmen

were unable to get Stogdon on to strike & the 9 runs required from the final over proved beyond them as the

innings closed on 163-7 & an agonizing 3 run defeat. Cockram 3-25 & Prendegast 2-18 were the pick of the

home attack.
