05/07/09 Ropley vs Whiteditch Wanderers Home, Match Won. Report by Geoff Dennis.

A Sunday win at last.

A quickfire opening stand of 39 between Ian Towson and John Purchese set the tone for the Ropley Innings. John Purchase went on to carry his bat and scored 142 not out. He was ably assisted by Martin Lentz (28) and Ed White (28 not out) with Ropley rattling up 251 in 36 overs.

It was a time game so taking wickets was the order of the day as Whiteditch Wanderers didn't even start the chase. Rolpey bowled well with Ed Stennett making the first breakthrough. Wickets continued to tumble with James Forrest and Tom Stennett taking two each and Jack Otway three before Ed White took the final wicket with three overs to spare. Whiteditch scored 101 in 30 overs. Extras was their top score.

A good win and well done John who also took a good catch.

28/06/09 Ropley vs Medstead Away, Match Tied. Report by Geoff Dennis.

Ropley elected to field in a 40 over game. Ed & Will Stennett opened the bowling and kept batsmen quiet with 32 coming from their nine overs. First change bowler Charlie Nops took two wickets, including a great catch in the deep by Martin Lentz, before Medstead put on 140 for the third wicket partnership. During this period Ropley bowled well but with little luck with plenty going in the air and a couple of chances given - both dropped. Martin Evans rejoined the attack to take 2 wickets and along with Martin Lentz put the brakes on, keeping Medstead to 237 rather than the 300 they looked like getting at one stage. Will Hudson took three catches behind the stumps.

Ropley's reply got off to a bad start with a run out in the first over. Jack Otway scored 37 and with Will Hudson put on 80 for the third wicket. When Will was out for 64 Ropley had scored over half the runs required with only 17 overs on the board. Martin Lentz carried on the fight, ably supported by Ed & Will Stennett and Charlie Nops plus extras. The game appeared to be drifting away from us with 36 required off the last 4 overs and 17 off the last. Two sixes from Martin in the last over including one off the last ball ensured a tie. Martin's knock was controlled and chanceless and he ended up on 82 not out including 5 sixes.

It was a fun and thoroughly entertaining afternoon's cricket.
