22nd August Away vs Basingstoke III - Match Lost, report by Martin Peters.
Ropleys
disappointing season continued with a convincing 6 wicket defeat at
relegation threatened Basingstoke on Saturday.
Batting first on
an excellent wicket, with a large fast outfield seemed the correct
choice as openers Alistair Cotton (14) & Marco Teixeira (29)
compiled 53 for the first wicket against an inocuous looking bowling
attack. Not for the first time this season the introduction of a spinner
accounted for Cotton, & when Robert Smith was run out without
scoring & Teixeira departed bowled trying to up the tempo, the score
stood at 60-3. Tom Wood & Martin Peters set about re-building the
innings, both timing the ball well into the gaps & forcing the field
back, they advanced the score to 122-3 after 28 overs, setting the
perfect platform to build a challenging score of 200 plus. However,
Peters was caught at the wicket for 38 & Tom Stroud followed LBW to
the very next ball, they were quickly joined by Jack Otway (0) &
Barry Newton (5) as the score slumped alarmingly to 133-7. Ollie
Williams (6) batted sensibly to help Wood add 27, but he fell to a smart
one handed catch, then Bobby Wood & debutant Max Parsonson both
fell for ducks as well as the innings folded for just 165. Wood was left
stranded on 54 not out.
The start of the Basingstoke innings
provided Ropley with some false hope as Bobby Wood & Peters both
collected a wicket in their first over, leaving the hosts at 4-2.
McKenna & Bissoon added 56 before Teixeira removed McKenna for 29,
but the Ropley bowling & fielding had a decidedly end-of-season look
to it as Gregory & Bissoon helped themselves to an array of
ill-directed deliveries. Skipper Wood changed his bowlers regularly,
even giving himself a first bowl of the season in search of a
breakthrough, but with the exception of Newton (0-30 off 10) they lacked
control as the game slipped away. Wood returned to remove Gregory for
47, but Bissoon held firm in hitting a chanceless unbeaten 75 to steer
his side home with a full 10 overs to spare. Ropley now need at least 4
points from their final game of the season to stave of the threat of
relegation.

15th August Home vs Pylewell Park - Match Lost, report by Martin Peters.
Ropley
were comprehensively beaten by a strong Pylewell Park team on saturday,
whose victory owed much to the all round talents of Tom Gates.
Batting
first, Gates & his opening partner Royan were regularly troubled by
the ever unlucky Bobby Wood, but they compiled a 49 run stand before a
sharp slip catch from Andrew Walker off Mark Munday saw the end of
Royan. Gates was joined by Woolger in a stand of 60, but Munday (2-33)
again broke the stand, Gates continued to dominate looking relatively
untroubled until Tom Strouds tempting leg stump full toss saw him hole
out on the square leg boundary for 80 with the score at 165-3. The race
for quick runs was then on as Pylewell closed in on 200, Newton 2-20
& Stroud 2-28 benefitted from some loose strokes as the innings
ended on 201-7.
Marco Teixeira quickly lost 2 partners at the
start of the reply, the early batsmen being ruffled by the pace of
Woolger who extracted sharp bounce from the previously benign surface. A
recovery was staged from 16-2 as Tom Wood helped put on 79, the highest
partnership of the day, for the 3rd wicket. Teixeira again looked in
great form as he punished anything loose, including taking 17 from a
Woolger over, but the introduction of Gates & veteran seamer Kitcher
changed the game. Gates removed Wood for 25 with the score at 105-3
with 15 overs remaining, & the game looked like it could go either
way. However the Ropley middle order could not handle the combination of
the accuracy of Gates combined with the seam movement of Kitcher as the
middle of the innings fell to pieces. The next 7 wickets fell for the
addition of just 33 runs, only Stuart Currall (11) managed to make
double figures as Pylewell ran out comfortable victors by 63 runs. Gates
capped his fine day with 3-22 off 10, Kitcher 2-26 & Royan 2-27
were the other successful bowlers.

August Away vs Ellingham - Match Lost, report by Martin Peters.
Ropley
suffered a disappointing 2 run defeat against an under strength high
flying Ellingham on Saturday, in a game they really should have won.
Ellingham
surprisingly opted to bat first on a damp wicket, but made a steady
start before Tom Stroud induced a false shot out of opener Dawkins who
chopped on for 14 out of 38. Spin was predictably introduced early, but
with anything through the infield racing quickly away to the boundary,
the Ellingham batsmen kept the scoring rate healthy. 3 wickets then fell
in quick succession as the score slumped from 69-1 to 85-4 in just 2
overs, Martin Peters snaring one whilst Mark Munday ousted 2 to put
Ropley on top. However, the powerfully built Stevenson went on the
attack as he hit the ball very hard to all parts of the ground, he raced
to his 50 off just 20 balls & was eventually dismissed for 69 off
just 28 balls, including 6 massive sixes & 7 fours, Munday finally
trapping him LBW. Ropley were still removing wickets at the other end,
so when Stevenson went they were still on top at 165-8, but the late
arriving Warren (25) helped add a crucial 42 for the last 2 wickets as
the hosts posted a competitive 207 all out. Munday collected a deserved 5
wicket haul (5-55) & the other wickets were equally shared between
Stroud, Barry Newton, Peters & MarcoTeixeira.
15 year old
Robert Smith again opened the batting with Teixeira with some maturity,
the openers moved easily along to 67 before Smith fell to spinner Cox
for 19. Alistair Cotton (11) helped the in form Teixeira add a further
39, then Peters joined in a stand of 60 which looked to be pushing
Ropley on the way to a comfortable victory as the score progressed to
166-2 after 38 overs, leaving 42 required from the last 7 overs with 8
wickets in hand. Both batsmen fell at the same score, both caught on the
long-on boundary, first Teixeira was well caught for an excellent 89
including 14 fours & 1 six off 96 balls, then Peters went in
identical fashion for 36, leaving Tom Stroud & Tom Wood to see them
home. 21 were required from the last 3 overs, this was reduced to 15 off
the last 2, then 7 off the last over, in which there were crucially 3
dot balls, Stroud was unable to score the 4 required for a tie from the
final ball as they finished agonisingly 2 runs short. Stroud ended
unbeaten on 28 off 22 balls & Wood 10 off 15, an opportunity missed
to secure survival for this season.

25th July Away vs Hungerford - Match Won, report by Andrew Walker.
Everything
went to plan for Ropley 1st XI as they restricted Hungerford to a below
par total of 221 and chased the runs for an empathetic victory.
Due
to various injuries and weddings, Ropley fielded a young 1st XI with a
stand in skipper for this vital bottom half of the table clash away at
Hungerford. Ropley chose to bowl on a track that was very grassy but
with a lightening fast outfield. Wickets were hard to come by as the
Hungerford openers solidly stuck to their task. Eventually, Bobby Wood
who finished his 10 over spell for just 16 runs, broke the deadlock
thanks to a good catch from Marco Teixeira at extra cover. Mitchell
Watterson, Hungerford’s captain came to the crease and batted with
consistency throughout the innings finishing on 78 not out. Only two
other wickets fell during the innings, Martin Peters forced the other
Hungerford opener to hit his own stumps and Tom Stennett picking up a
deserved wicket at the death as Hungerford were ramping up the run rate.
Credit is due to the Ropley bowlers for restricting the total to 221 as
it could have been far higher.
Ropley openers Smith (38) and
Teixeira (29) made a superb start to Ropley’s innings, keeping up with
the run rate and giving no chances. Following Teixeira’s demise,
Alistair Cotton strode to the crease and then strode to the pavilion
having been adjudged LBW first ball. This proved to only be a blip as
Martin Peters (67) steadied the innings. He was soon joined by Tom
Stroud who made his first league 50. They very nearly saw Ropley home
but after a partnership of 125 both elected to get caught leaving the
final glory to Walker and Parkinson who went to the middle needing only
10 runs from three overs to seal the victory. It was an assured
performance from Ropley who are steadily climbing the table, away from
the relegation zone.

4th July Away vs US Porstmouth II - Match Won, report by Martin Peters
A
disciplined bowling performance from the Ropley spinners ensured a 15
run victory over basement boys US Portsmouth on Saturday, after the
batsmen had posted a below par score at the former county ground.
Electing
to bat first on a used surface seemed the correct choice as the US
bowlers sprayed it around initially, a lightning fast outfield providing
good value for any shots through the field. Stuart Currall dominated
early on, he lost his opening partner Marco Teixeira (10) to a lifting
delivery on 34, & the middle order all proceeded to get themselves
well set before departing to a mixed bag of poor shots. Currall departed
for 45, Alistair Cotton 18, Tom Wood 20 & Martin Peters 15 as the
score slipped to 117-5 after 32 overs. A needless run out of Tom
Stennett followed, but veteran Hampshire over 50s player Barry Newton
batted sensibly for his 31 to push the score up to 172 all out, which
looked about 50 short of what was required.
Tight bowling &
good catching was needed to defend the small total, but 2 catches were
dropped before the score had reached 10, then Bobby Wood (1-29) was
rewarded for his persistance as he removed Adams for 6. 15 year old
Stennett bowled with great control as both he & Wood beat the bat on
a number of occassions. The spinners were introduced early, as the
wicket started to bounce unevenly, & this had immediate effect as
Peters grabbed a wicket in his 4th, 5th & 6th overs, one courtesy of
a very smart stumping from Ollie Williams, as the home side struggled
to 52-4 after 22 overs. Mark Munday bowled with his usual great control
& variety, & he soon got in on the act too as he collected 2
caught & bowled opportunities to reduce the score to 102-7 after 33.
Stennett (1-26) returned to claim a wicket in his 1st over back, before
Newton took 2 wickets in 2 balls, both courtesy of superb catches from
Cotton. The US number 11 Gray looked as though he should have batted
much higher in their order as he came in a batted very well for an
unbeaten 21, but Newton claimed the final wicket with the penultimate
ball as the innings ended on 157 all out. Peters 3-35. Munday 2-30 &
Newton 3-18 were the main wicket takers in a 21 point victory.

27th June Away vs Burridge II - Match Lost, report by Martin Peters
Ropley
failed in their quest to record a third consecutive victory as they
crashed to a comprehensive 67 run defeat at Burridge on Saturday.
Losing
the toss was not part of the master plan, so it was no surprise when
the Burridge skipper chose to make first use of an excellent looking
track, which coupled with a lightning fast outfield promised lots of
runs. Both opening bats were tested early on as Bobby Wood beat the bat
on countless occasions, a close LBW shout was turned down & a tight
run out decision also went against Ropley as they struggled early. 54
runs were on the board inside the first 10 overs, both openers profiting
from missed catches before Perias (23) was removed caught & bowled
by Marco Teixeira. Lane joined opener Mepham in a stand of 92 in just 18
overs as the runs flowed easily, Martin Peters removed Lane for 34
& White 24 to leave the score at 192-3 after 38 overs. 62 runs came
from the last 7 overs despite Tom Stroud collecting 2 wickets in one
over. including Mepham for 105. The innings finished on 254-5, with
Stroud 2-25 & Peters 2-47 the main wicket takers, although Wood 0-36
from 10 was particularly unlucky to finish wicketless.
The reply
required a solid start if Ropley were going to chase down the big
target, & despite the loss of Stuart Currall for 10, they were
progressing nicely at 95-1 after 20 overs. The innings then changed in
the space of 3 overs as 3 quick wickets were lost, first Alistair Cotton
was LBW for 16 & then crucially Teixeira followed in the next over
without any addition to the score. Having batted beautifully to ease
himself to 60 off 62 balls he inexplicably charged spinner Hardcastle
& was bowled, before Chris Graham fell LBW in the very next over
& Tom Wood was bowled as the score slumped to 106-5. Tom Stroud
& Peters set about re-building the chase as they added 50 steady
runs in the next 12 overs, but with 10 overs to go 105 runs were still
required. Stroud perished for 21 trying to up the tempo, spinner Booth
3-19 removed a couple more as the game drifted away. Peters was left
stranded on 47 not out as the innings ended on a disappointing 187 all
out.

20th June Home vs Old Basing - Match Won, report by Martin Peters
Ropley
recorded their second win in a row with a tense 5 run victory over Old
Basing on Saturday.
After being invited to make first use of a
tricky drying wicket, the Ropley openers put on 45 inside the first 12
overs before departing to consecutive balls, Marco Teixeira was stumped
for 20 before Stuart Currall perished caught for 21. Tom Wood &
Alistair Cotton set about re-building the innings & were confronted
by some accurate bowling, Basing used four different spinners who all
found the sharply turning wicket to their liking. Cotton survived a
couple of dropped catches as well as 2 missed run out opportunities as
the pair put on 107 runs before he finally parted with 6 overs to go for
a well struck 37. Last weeks centurion Martin Peters (10) joined Wood
to push the score along, both fell attempting big shots, Wood's 62
contained 9 fours & took just 64 balls. A couple more late wickets
fell to run outs as the innings ended on 189-7 from the full 45 overs.
Fresh
from scoring over 300 the previous week, the Basing batsmen saw this
target as well within their grasp, but they came up against controlled
early bowling from the economical Bobby Wood (0-14 from 6). Mark Munday
was quickly introduced with his left arm spin & he soon had the
batsmen struggling with the turn & bounce.
Richard Wilcock
who had scored 180 last week, again looked threatening as he made 35
before he was removed by Munday, but whilst Timms was still at the
crease they still had a good chance. At 120-5 the game still was hanging
in the balance, but Timms played a loose shot on 44 & was caught
off Barry Newton (2-45) leaving Basing up against it. Greg & Matt
Donaldson inched them towards the target & finally got it down to 6
required from the last over with 2 wickets in hand. With the field well
spread Donaldson smashed a Teixeira delivery straight down the throat of
Tom Wood at long off, & from the very next ball the other Donaldson
was caught behind attempting a big heave to leave the Basing reply just
5 runs short.
Munday was the star performer with the ball
taking 3-26 off 10, Teixeira ended with 3-41 & Peters & Tom
Stroud both took 1-25 in another nail-biting win.

13th June Away vs Cadnam - Match Won, report by Martin Peters
Ropley
finally recorded their first win of the season on Saturday, with a
nervy 7 run success against 3rd place Cadnam.
Batting first, the
Ropley openers were faced with a swinging ball on an initially helpful
surface which saw them lose the first two wickets with just 12 runs on
the board. A mini revival was staged by Tom Wood & Marco Teixeira,
they took the score along to 51 before Teixeira fell for 24 to a
contentious LBW decision. This brought Martin Peters to the wicket to
join Wood in what was to prove the pivotal stand of the game. Peters was
the dominant partner in a stand of 124 in 22 overs, passing his 50 in
55 balls, Wood finally fell for a dogged 46 leaving the score at 175-4
with 6 overs to go.
The loss of another quick wicket did not
deter Peters from upping the scoring rate as he blazed to all parts of
the ground to record his second fifty in just 27 balls. Chris Glanfield
(11 not out) was his silent partner as 49 runs were added in the final 4
overs, to boost the total to a defendable 232-5. Peters ended on 121
not out from 91 balls, which included 7 sixes & 11 fours.
15
year old Robert Smith was entrusted with the new ball alongside a pumped
up Teixeira, & Smith was rewarded for his consistant good line
& swing with the prized wicket of the previously prolific
Durston-Ryan caught at the wicket for just 8. Teixeira passed the bat on
numerous occasions before he finally managed to get one through the
defences of the home skipper Jewer, Mark Munday followed this up with an
early wicket of his own as Cadnam slipped to 47-3 after 13 overs. This
was soon 75-4 as Barry Newton got in on the act courtesy of another
slightly dodgy LBW, but the incoming R.Way had other ideas about the
outcome of the game. He clubbed a quite brutal 55 runs off just 24
balls, including 6 sixes, before Munday clean bowled him to give Ropley
renewed hope.
Cadnam eased their way to 184-6 with 9 overs
remaining & looked slight favourites for the win. The 7th wicket
fell with the score on 200 with 6 overs left thanks to a caught &
bowled by Peters, Tom Stroud bagged the 8th wicket at 202, leaving 31
needed from the final 5 overs with 2 wickets left. Sharpe fielding from
Wood saw the 9th man run out at 217, then Cadnam required 12 to win from
the last 3 overs. Just 3 came from over 43, Smith returned to bowl over
44 & held his nerve impressively to concede just 1 run, meaning
that 8 were needed from Peters last over. However the first ball nipped
past the last mans outside edge & Chris Graham gleefully completed
the stumping to complete the 7 run win. Munday 2-39, Stroud 2-48 &
Peters 2-23 were the main wicket takers in this 24 point success.
