Oliver Cup Round 2 – Hedge End CC v Ropley CC – Sunday 13th June

It was an early start this weekend for our eagerly anticipated round 2 cup match against Hedge End.

Ropley captain for the day, Ben Hardy, won the toss and decided to field on what seemed to be a newly laid

artificial wicket. Opening bowlers Will Bentley (struggling with a back injury) and Ben Hardy soon found the

Hedge End opening pair stiff opposition, with singles being taken where possible and some impressive

boundaries being scored in the initial period. However, when the wickets started to fall the runs began to dry up

and both Hugo Hughes and Jack Oxenham were particularly economical during their spells. Nevertheless,

Hedge End finished their inning on 115 runs for the loss of just 4 wickets.

After the interval, Ropley openers (Will and Ben again) took to the crease with the aim of scoring just under one

run per ball. However, after the first five overs and with Ben falling to a fine catch on just 3 runs, the ship well

and truly needed steadying!

Enter, Hugo Hughes in aggressive mood! Having scored one magnificent six and two further boundaries as well

as plenty of quick and decisive running between the stumps, Hugo reached the 30 runs mark with comparative

ease, at which point he (unfortunately) had to retire. This excellent innings and Will Bentley’s equally cool 26

runs, ensured that Ropley were still very much in touch at the 10 over drinks interval, and almost planning the

victory celebrations. However, disaster loomed! After the fall of Will’s wicket, the rest of the team seemed to go

into batting meltdown, losing a further 6 wickets for just 11 runs. A combination of Ropley nerves and impressive

Hedge End bowling/fielding was the cause, and the hope of an impressive victory soon turned to the frustration

of impending defeat. There was always the hope that Hugo would return after the fall of the last wicket to try to

rescue things, but unfortunately Ropley just ran out of overs.

So Ropley bowed out of the 2010 Oliver Cup, beaten by the better team. We now have the Oliver Plate

competition to look forward to, and having witnessed some of the cricket we are capable of in recent weeks, I

think we could have an excellent chance.

Man of the Match – Hugo Hughes (for an inspirational innings and some fine bowling).

Ropley CC v Sparsholt B – Sunday 6th June

Despite being ravaged by half term absence this week, I managed to muster up a team of ten for this friendly

match against Sparsholt’s B team. As it turned out this was two more than the opposition had managed! It was

therefore agreed that playing the pairs format, and allowing one of the Sparsholt pairs to bat and bowl twice was

in order.

In glorious conditions, Ropley captain for the day, Hugo Hughes, won the toss and decided to field first. This

proved to be an excellent choice, as Ropley’s opening four pairs of bowlers had plenty of success reducing

Sparsholt to 194 runs (from a starting point of 200) after 16 of the 20 overs. Bowling performance of the day

came from Jack Stevens, taking 4 wickets for just 2 runs from his two overs. However, Sparsholt rallied in their

final four overs and finished their innings on 225, having lost 11 wickets in the process.

After the interval, Ropley’s opening pair, Jack Oxenham and Jonathan Flindt  took to the crease and after hitting

four boundaries between them, finished their spell with a the score on 214. Will Bentley and Hugo then replaced

them and even though they lost three wickets between them, they also hit a further six boundaries, with Will

providing the batting performance of the day (26 runs). Sparsholt’s target had been comfortably passed by the

end of the eighth over, and sensible batting was therefore all that was needed from the remaining batsmen.

Needless to say all was not as comfortable as it should have been, and with no fewer than five wickets falling in

the 16th and 17th overs there was a point where the result looked in jeopardy, but as it turned out Ropley

finished the innings on an impressive 275 for 11, and victory was secured.

All things considered this was an excellent performance and confidence is now high going into Round 2 of the

Oliver Cup next week.

Oliver Cup Round 1 - Ropley CC v Longparish CC – Thursday 27th May

Following the mini heatwave of last weekend, Ropley’s buoyant under 11s were back on the field this evening in

much cooler and breezier conditions. This match, having been hastily brought forward from it’s scheduled date

of Sunday 30th May (due to the conflict with the annual Ropley 10K race), was played at Rotherfield Park CC

and had high importance to both teams, being the first round of the WWJC Oliver Cup.

Ropley’s captain, Will Bentley, won the toss and elected to field.

With no less than three district players, and one county player in their side, Longparish represented stiff

opposition, and their opening batsmen admirably coped with some fierce and accurate bowling from messr’s

Bentley, Kelson and Hughes in the opening overs. However, they were finding it hard to get runs and when

Ropley made the first breakthrough, with a fine throw from Sam Ingall-Tombs and a stumping from James

Tillotson, Longparish had just 29 runs on the board.

Further wickets then fell, with both Will Bentley and Ben Kelson clean bowling two more batsmen, and a safe
catch by Hugo Hughes off of the bowling of Jack Oxenham, dismissing the fourth.

After 20 overs of excellent cricket on both sides, Longparish ended their innings on 68 runs having lost just 4

wickets.

Following a welcome interval, with drinks and biscuits served from the Tillotson camper van, Ropley’s opening

batsmen, Ben Hardy and Will Bentley, confidently took to the crease. The confidence however was to be short

lived, with Ben Hardy falling in the first over to a fine catch.

The pressure was starting to build with the wickets of Ben Kelson (an unlucky inside edge onto the stumps!) and

Hugo Hughes (bowled) falling in the following overs, for just 2 and five runs respectively. Meanwhile, Will

Bentley was settling in to a captain’s innings, taking single runs whenever he could and dealing steadily with

some excellent bowling from the Longparish attack.

By the start of 13th over the game was perfectly poised with Ropley on 47 runs with 3 wickets down, and

Longparish fielding superbly. But with subsequent boundaries from Jack Oxenham, and Caius McEwan

(a magnificent over the shoulder hook shot!), and Will Bentley calmly keeping control alongside them, the

pressure eased and Ropley passed their target in the 16th over to win the game.

Bowler of the Day – Ben Kelson (4 overs, 1 wicket for just 10 runs)

Batsman of the Day – Will Bentley (22 runs, not out)

Man of the Match – Will Bentley (for a great innings and leading by example).

Wherwell CC v Ropley CC – Sunday 23rd May 2010

On a glorious sunny morning at Wherwell CC, with the temperature rising to around 30 Deg C, you’d have been

forgiven for thinking that the fabled English summer had finally arrived!

After formal introductions, Wherwell’s captain won the toss, and elected to bat first. Ropley captain, Will Bentley,

opened the bowling and with the last ball of his first over the batsman knicked an outside edge to be caugh

behind by wicket keeper, James Tillotson.

With Wherwell one wicket down, and just two runs on the board, Ropley’s bowlers never looked back.  Further
wickets were subsequently taken by Jack Oxenham (2) and Hugo Hughes (1), but performance of the day, has

to go to Ben Hardy, who bowled a four wicket maiden in his second over, and finished his spell after just three

overs, having taken six Wherwell wickets for just five runs!

Wherwell finished their innings having been bowled out for just 26 runs.

After a very welcome interval for some cold drinks, Ropley’s opening batsmen (Will Bentley and Ben Hardy)
took to the crease in confident mood, and within the fifth over, passed the target that had been set.

Allthough the game had been comfortably won, both sides agreed to play out the full twenty overs, and Ropley’s
batsmen subsequently went on to a total of 109 for 1.

Batting performance of the day went to Ben Kelson, batting at number three, with an innings of 27 runs from sixovers, hitting six fours on the way.
