
Ropley Cricket Club held their awards evening at the Ropley Sports Club’s pavilion with a theme of
the 70’s and 80’s.
As a result it was a star studded affair with a lot of flair(s), appearances by Maggie Thatcher, Jane
Fonder, a Smurf, two Adam Ants, Austin Powers, Alice Cooper, a member of Kiss, the Blues Brothers,
Elvis and a cross dressing Wonder Woman, together with an assortment of peace loving hippy types
man !
The awards themselves were handed out by Club President, Dickie Day, and dominated by the more
Junior members of the club with Ed Stennett winning three (Sunday Bowling, Best Bowling
performance in a senior match and Most improved player) and John Purchese two (Highest Score in a
senior match and Best performance by a junior in a senior match).
The Hampshire league awards were won by Martin (Austin Powers) Peters 1st XI Batting, Bobby
Wood 1st XI Bowling: Ollie (the pensioner) Green 2nd XI Batting, John (Far out man) Sutton 2nd XI
Bowling .
Marco (Medallion Man) Texeira, Ropley’s Overseas Player, won the Sunday batting and the catching
cup.
Alex Ehrmann won the none playing award, for her sterling work with the award winning Ropley
under 9s and Andrew (Old Git) Walker won the Stokes cup for his magnificent work developing the
Ropley CC website.
Special thanks were also made to Geoff Dennis the retiring Chairman for all his unselfish hard work,
Moira Newton for her scoring duties, and too the most important person Vonnie Archer for her
great teas.
Once the awards were made the revellers danced the night away to local band ‘The Covers’.
